Trying to make the ultimate light theme for Cinnamon.
Wallpaper (subjected to gaussian blur)

Updates
- Apr 29, 2013: Brought up-to-date with Cinnamon 1.7.7 + menu right click submenu bug fix (thx GREY_FOX!)
- Jan 12, 2013: Small menu improvement
- Jan 4, 2013: Some users experienced lag with Baldr so I have toned down the box-shadow (my main suspect) - the calendar is a bit dull now but hopefully quicker for those who experience lag :o)
- Dec 26, 2012: Massive overhaul - basically a new theme

    Hi - Great theme. 5 stars from me. Has this been made Cinnamon 2.2 compatible? (Support to highlight newly installed applications in the menu >> menu-application-button:highlighted and .menu-application-button-selected:highlighted)

    Awesome theme :-) The new nemo file operation progress applet is not shown properly in panel . Unsure, if this is an issue specific to the theme though....

    Very, very nice theme. Gorgeous design. Really finishes my desktop off. Thanks so much. :)

    Hi! Good theme, i like it so much but i think there is a little mistake. When i try to add an application as favorite through right click on menu i get submenu cutted. Probably it depends on your theme because with standard theme it works.

  5. clem says:

    It's faster for me now, the speed is improved on the calendar applet anyway.

  6. mcutting says:

    Still really slow for me. With the Nouveau driver, the theme works fine - with nVidia (even with the recent changes to the theme), the calendar applet takes an incredible 8 SECONDS to appear - this is just not right for a Quad core AMD Athlon II X4 640 (-MCP-) clocked at Min:800.000Mhz Max:3000.000Mhz ! You've got to love nVidia

    I can't reproduce it, on my machine it's no slower than other themes :o/ I wouldn't make/publish/accept a theme with noticeable lag, it's a massive nuissance.
    It's also one of the lightest themes at 143kb (sans thumbnail) so it's not because it's "heavy".- The calendar uses a lot of box-shadow so I suspect that's the culprit. I have uploaded an updated Baldr with much less box-shadow, hope that helps - otherwise I'm out of ideas!

    Hi bimsebasse. I can confirm the theme is heavier/slower than others. It's particularly noticeable on the date applet, when clicking the date it takes almost a full second to show the calendar.

  9. bimsebasse says:

    1 year ago

    That's odd :o/

  10. mcutting says:

    As I said earlier, I think this has to do with the nVidia drivers. If I remove this, and use the default Nouveau driver, it seems to work fine. However, not using nVidia just isn't going to work for me unfortunately.

  11. bimsebasse says:

    Can't reproduce it - don't notice any difference in menu load times between this, the default cinnamon theme, Sunset or other themes I tried :o/

    Amazing theme - problem for me (and possibly related to nVidia) is that is is incredibly slow - particularly, anything to do with the menu itself, or the applets in the panel. Switching between open windows seems ok, but I'm looking at up to 5 seconds for a response doing anything outside of this. Apart from that, this theme looks great. I have switched back to "Sunset" (my own theme), as this does not seem to have this issue - any thoughts ? Thanks

    Hi DeRRudi - I had too many themes to maintain, it takes a lot of time to update them all whenever there's a larger Cinnamon update, and I also don't want to flood this place with my themes - so I deleted Holo (great alternative in the Jelly Bean theme), Zukitwo (didn't like it anymore) and OMG just to take the workload off. If you want you're very welcome to maintain OMG from here, just upload it to the theme page and keep it updated, no credits necessary.

    No comment on your dissapeared OMG theme?

    @bimsebasse: I don't know how to contact you otherwise. But what happened with your OMG theme? I really liked that theme.

    ... or download again, I have edited the themes have a 25px panel now.

  18. bimsebasse says:

    1 year ago

    Just downloaded it, the cinnamon.css has a modified date of 23/9 2012 - some files in the folder will show older dates than that because they haven't been modified lately. Thanks for noticing the panel behavior, that's a new bug - I'll file it on github asap. Until it is sorted out you have to change panel size manually in the cinnamon.css file from "28px;" to "25px;" (and use Cinnamon Settings to set panel size to 28px if you wish)

  19. chrnoble says:

    1 year ago

    I'm not sure that the file you have available for download is for Cinnamon 1.6. The bottom of a maximized window is overlapped by the panel, just like it would be for a theme for a previous version of Cinnamon. In fact, the modified date on the files I downloaded shows as "27 May 2012". I downloaded it a couple of times, just to be sure.

  20. bimsebasse says:

    I changed it because I think blending in with the surroundings isn't a good idea for notifications - it's easy to change back though, just find an earlier version on the theme's launchpad page and replace the #notification code in the new baldr with that in the old baldr.

  21. raqua says:

    1 year ago

    I have one more issue and I am not sure, whether it is a bug or feature. :) Notifications in my cinnamon using this theme are just pure black with white letters. It somehow does not fit to this theme for me. I would like to have these notifications in gray color as the rest of the theme. I remember, that they once were gray. Did you changed it or is there something messed up in my system? Thx.

    Sorted in the new version

    Hello Bimsebasse, Baldr, Loki and Ambiance do not seem to work properly with Cinnamon > 1.5.8. I have tested it on Archlinux. Please see this bug report for details: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/481#issuecomment-8559035 Thx.

    Baldr theme is the best! so clean task bar launched apps! and i like volume control button its very classy and stylish :) Also left bottom corner doesn't have gap so i can always click on menu without aiming it first. And most important of all its light. My computer is very fast with this theme. Menu fonts are great. Very clean and compact theme. Good Job!

    Here's how to do it:
    --
    Find this bit (in Loki's cinnamon.css file):
    --
    .popup-menu {
    border-radius: 4px;
    background-color: #3c3c3c;
    --
    Change the "#3c3c3c" to e.g. "rgba(60,60,60,0.8)" for 80% transparency.
    --
    In Baldr which uses a gradient it looks a bit different:
    --
    .popup-menu {
    border-radius: 4px;
    background-gradient-direction: vertical;
    background-gradient-start: #f7f7f7;
    background-gradient-end: #ccc;
    --
    Change "#f7f7f7" to e.g. "rgba(247,247,247,0.9)" and "#ccc" to "rgba(204,204,204,0.9)" for 90% transparency.
    And careful you don't delete any ";", a single missing ";" means the Cinnamon desktop won't load.

  32. bimsebasse says:

    The opacity is a deliberate design choice and here to stay. IMO transparency in menus only work as pitch black 85-90% (like in Minty or Elegance), the default theme is proof (to me) that dark gray with transparency doesn't look good and I don't think it works with white/light backgrounds either - not sure what you mean by feeling claustrophobic in the absence of transparency anyway, must be a hassle when reading books or talking to people :o)

  33. cinnamint says:

    2 years ago

    Love these themes... can i make a request? please make Loki and Baldr with a slight transparency. like 2-5% transparency would not make me feel so claustrophobic when i open the menu.

  35. bimsebasse says:

    Make a law abiding theme, Baldr and Loki are anarchists.

  36. Pointedstick says:

    With today's version 3.1, the menu button is no longer triggered by the corner pixel. This is very important! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitts's_law Please fix ASAP!

  37. Pointedstick says:

    2 years ago

    I love these, especially Baldr! One problem: the buttons in the window switcher panel don't follow Fitt's law; you need to move your cursor up one pixel from the bottom of the screen to actually click on the button.

    Loki's been my favorite theme since the vertical spacing issue was resolved. Thanks! I would like make the same suggestion as Sidhartha above - add hover highlighting to the favorites. Anyway, I appreciate all of your great work bimsebasse, especially your PPA for cinnamon extras.

  39. bimsebasse says:

    2 years ago

    The classic Gnome 2 Mint Menu background? That won't be me, I think it looks OK but prefer clean surfaces. It's a good starting point for your own theme though if you want to make one, copy baldr (or loki), use the background if you can find it as an image file and the modify the theme after your tastes, it's easier than you might think :o)

  40. mack_guy911 says:

    2 years ago

    awesome theme i like both of your theme barld and loki everything very clear in your theme which is best part just one thing i feel if you had would be great menu background matching your theme would be awesome something like this with light at above and dark at below matching your default theme but not plan http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_julia_whatsnew.php hope i make understand sorry i dont know what its called

  41. Sidhartha says:

    2 years ago

    Very nice theme. I like the darker themes generally. My only suggested addition, is some sort of hover highlight over the favourites list, which is absent right now.

  42. bimsebasse says:

    2 years ago

    Yes, I found out panel height = 25px is the only thing that works (for bottom panels) currently in Cinnamon, so that should be sorted. When Cinnamon sorts out bottom panel anchor points it will possible to tinker with panel size again, until then, 25px :o)

  43. jordansc says:

    2 years ago

    Veritical spacing of icons and text in the panel is much improved! Thanks.

  44. ExploZeR says:

    This is the best cinnamon themes, as for me. I like baldr version. Thanks :)

  45. bimsebasse says:

    Don't know what goes wrong there, on my laptop it's dead center as top panel and dead center (-1 pixel but that goes for all themes) as bottom panel, certainly not as far down as in your screenshot :o/

  46. jordansc says:

    2 years ago

    I did screenshots of the panels of another theme and loki to show you how the panel icons and text appear lower in loki. Thanks. The other theme is located at http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/221/anothertheme.png/ Loki is here: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/714/lokipanel.png/

  47. bimsebasse says:

    2 years ago

    I think it's the strong text-shadow which gives that impression, the core text itself is vertically centered (at least on my laptop, I hope it doesn't look wonky on everyone else's :o). I If I push the text just a nudge higher it comes too close to the top edge of the panel.

  48. jordansc says:

    2 years ago

    I love the increased applet spacing. Text in the panel (date/time, open apps, etc.) appears a bit low on my screen, too close to the bottom edge of the panel versus most other themes. It's a very minor quibble and I appreciate your great work!

  49. bimsebasse says:

    2 years ago

    Yep, just sorted that and did some more tidying up and applet spacing adjustment.

  50. Anton_K says:

    2 years ago

    The tray icons are now VERY big, fixed it with "height: 22px;" for .panel-status-button. Thanks for the quick updates ;)

  51. bimsebasse says:

    2 years ago

    Well spotted Anton, that wasn't intentional - fixed in both themes now.

  52. Anton_K says:

    2 years ago

    With the new version (2.0) of Baldr are the spaces between icons on the panel really too large. I had to fix this with "spacing: 0px;" for #panelRight.

  53. jordansc says:

    2 years ago

    I love the 3D-ish panel, the classy looking fonts and the subtle highlighting in the start menu. Very professional theme!

    I really like how you did the panel, gave it some depth. I also really like the bigger bolder fonts, mainly from my old man eyes and my 23 inch monitor. Most the other themes have a thin smaller font which is good, but not so good when your struggling with old age. This theme too also blends in nice with my favorite window theme zukitwo-dark. I hope to see more of your work and hope you continue on with a good bold decent size font set up and the rounded bevel type panels. Worth 5 stars easy.
