Last commit: [26b37308] redshift@marvel4u: Add Dutch translation (#5842)

An app to change the red filter level for late night screen time. Requires redshift: sudo apt-get install redshift

Redshift applet

A powerful applet that allows quick activation and configuration of the red filter and brightness provided by redshift. It supports manual change of the temperature and brightness which is not possible in the redshift-gtk and enable/disable transition between day and night.

1) Install redshift:

  • Debian/Ubuntu/Linux Mint and other Debian based distributions: sudo apt-get install redshift.
  • Red Hat/Cent OS/Fedora: sudo dnf install redshift.

2) Extract to ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets.

3) Enable the applet in cinnamon settings.

  • 2.1.0

    • Tooltip improvements with more information about the state of Redshift.
    • Translation fixes.
  • 2.0.0

    • Options for transition between day and night (oneshot option still available).
    • Applet configuration menu.
    • Preferences are saved between computer shutdowns using the applet configuration (enabled on startup, temperature and brigthness remembered).
    • Added Spanish localization.
    • Icon improved: black lightbulb for Redshift disabled, red lightbulb for oneshot mode and red sunset for transition between day and night.
  • 1.0.0
    • stable release.

Forked from

Thanks to @Martin1887 for his work on versions 2.0.0 and 2.1.0.

OUCH! Bug / feature -- please fix accordingly. . Upon 1st install & activate: *Please* MODIFY THIS APP so it reads *CURRENT* OS brightness setting, ... and have it set its own, internal configuration.. ... accordingly. . Have it do this before activating the daemon (so we don't get a big flash). . I just had my eyes blinded! . My screen was set to 01% brightness. . Then I ran this desklet... It took me 30 seconds of fiddling / tweaking settings, , before I got my screen's brightness BACK DOWN to 01%. (within the desklet config) . Please fix this: It should obey pre-existing LCD settings (**even if it is "daytime" -- a person might be in a darkened room, and preparing to go to sleep soon, even in the middle of the "day" !)

Would it be possible to add a configuration to change the start and end times for night configurations?

works good on 20.2. I suggest doing a 'sudo killall redshift' before installing or running for the first time.

Why do we have TWO redshifts?

apart of that, beautiful app, thanks

Since 19.3 Linux Mint Cinnamon, it still works but give an error message that it did not load correctly, please contact the owner.

Stopped working after upgrade to Mint 19.3 Cinnamon. No icon in panel. Error message when running redshift-gtk in terminal: /usr/bin/python3: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ undefined symbol: xapp_status_icon_new

Also, can you please make a switch for the brightness control? Thanks.
Nitrooo-4 years ago
The problem is that when the applet is active the brightness is reset to applet's level on every reboot, but I want my distro's default behavior instead (restore the brightness at previous shutdown time).

I need additional configuration entries for redshift (e.g.: preserve=1), but when enabled from the applet it doesn't seem to read from the redshift config file. Can you please provide a mechanism for including additional configuration for redshift? The options provided by the applet are very basic and sometimes not enough. Thank you.

On my Mint 19.2 is unstable, not working anymore after the upgrade to the last version: The problem: if I enable the option "transition on night" the applet starts to reseting redshift every second.

Ignore, was a conflict with other software, called Iris. The applet is working and stable after disable Iris

Hi, on one of my Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon (3.6.7) machines it is not usable (a warning during installation is given). If you try it anyway, one will get a cyclic errormessage (Cinnaman popup) "geoclue2 cannot run (child process)" (or so) after changing any setting. Also manually input of location (GG.GGGGGG) did not change the behaviour. System is fully up-to-date (dist-upgrade).

Hi, in general, everything is fine. On my system it does not turn on from the first time, you have to press several times until the screen starts to change. Maybe it was better to hide all the settings in the option section. I set it up once, I don’t need to see all the parameters every time. Archlinux, Cinnamon 4.0.10.

Hello. Does this applet come with Mint and if so, in what sense? I've ended up utterly confused, what with `redshift`, `redshift-gtk` and seemingly two different applets, one of which gets marked by Cinnamon (in Mint 19.1) as problematic.
GNU_Linux_User-5 years ago
Also, it would be nice were the applet to read and writing settings from the main redshift config file - but it seems not to do so.

This applet shows a compatibility warning when one installs it on Mint 19.1.

In contrast to ttjimera, I found the current version works fine in Linux Mint 18.3. It is also listed under "Downloads" in the Applets panel (the "Applets App?"). In case you rarely use that panel (like me), here's a tip: in the Manage tab you need to select the Applet you want to add to a panel and press the "+" to add it. Heh.

The applet does not run on LM 17.1, Cinnamon 2.4.8. Which Cinnamon version is required as minimum, please?

It works very well. Thank you very much!

Dark icon, on the panel with a dark style - not visible at all.

It should be noted that this applet - which might be admirable - is *not* part of stock Mint 18.3. That is: if one is simply trying to get Redshift, together with its panel indicator, working in Mint 18.3, then the applet presented on this page is not your man, so to speak.

An awesome applet that provides GUI to configure redshift-gtk without having to pass command line parameters or edit the config file. Very convenient and useful. Only one imperfection I found. For more convenience I bound the command "pkill -USR1 redshift" (to enable/disable redshift) to a shortcut key. But the toggle switch on the GUI does not change accordingly when I used the shortcut.
