README

Close

This the the old cinnamon main menu prior to cinnamon 6.6

Installation

The easiest way to install an applet is to right click on the panel you want to add the applet to and select "Applets". Then go to the "Download" tab to download the applet and then add it to the panel on the "Manage" tab.

First thing first: thanks so much for making this applet! I've been using Mint since forever and I generally like changes, but I really don't get why they were thinking while designing this new menu. I find it ugly and way less legible while being more crammed, so this is exactly what I needed. That said I have a request: would it be possible to add an option to make it so, when you click the icon to open the menu, it opens centered on the screen like the Windows 11 menu does, meaning having the same left and right space from the borders? I always move my menu and docked software at the center of the screen, instead of the default bottom left, and I feel the old Mint menu opened in a "more centered" way if it makes sense. I have the same number of icons on my new 22.3 install, but even with just 7 icons + the menu opens on way too much to the left, because it's centered on the menu icon itself while I feel the old one opened with starting from the icon and going over to the right. I hope I explained myself clearly, English is not my native language, but if this is possible it would be a very nice addition! I'm also installing Mint on friends computers and they're used to the centered Windows 11 menu so they also find it a bit odd that it opens so much to the left if you put everything on the docked panel in the center.

Just saw the update, installed it immediately and it's now exactly where I expected! Thank you so much for being so quick with the update, now the menu is exactly the same as it was in my pre 22.3 install, even with the icons centered on the panel :)

This applet is not in the list on github, so I'll have to report a bug here. v1.0.1 - I can't change language input while the menu is open. I wanted to search for an app whose name is in my language, so I opened the menu and pressed CTRL+SHIFT in order to change the keyboard layout, but it didn't work - the layout applet doesn't react. The only way to user a non-English input in Classic menu is to change input language first and then open Classic menu to search for apps.

Thanks for this! One question, does it use the same applet.js file as I am attempting to remove the lock screen and log out buttons which I have always done by editing the applet.js file?

Yes in ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/...

hey so, how do you change the icon and text? there used to be an option where you can change the "LM" icon and also add text, my specific use is that i'm using a Windows XP skin (which thanks to your menu, the XP start menu skin finally works!!! <3) but now i'm unable to locate where to change the icon and add the "start" text. anything helps! thank you so much for blessing us with this menu.

Thanks for confirming, although when making the same changes to the file as I have done before they do not appear to be implemented. I will look into this more. Thanks again!

This is the best menu ever! The new default menu looks like it has been written by thirdgraders... (facepalm)

Even if I like the new menu more than the old, I am happy this is being provided. This is what Linux is about!

Many thanks for providing this. Much better than the new version IMHO.

I agree..! Hopefully they will improve the new menu, so that we can customize it again. And especially move the actions buttons (like shutdown) vertically again..

Dieses Applet ist eine Wohltat und endlich funktioniert das Blue-Mint Theme unter Linux Mint 22.3 wieder sauber.

LMDE7 update to Cinnamon 6.6 destroyed the menu. This applet is a relief. Thank you so much. Where can i donate some money for this menu to @fredcw?
Melroy van den Berg
I agree.. Cinnamon 6.6 destroyed the perfectly fine menu... Maybe they should first beta test this menu first with a selective amount of people, before pushing it this hard

Ow luckily its still there.... I was really the VERTICALLY stacked system buttons.. I wanted to go back to the "classic" menu again. I don't yet like the new menu, its not efficient.
Melroy van den Berg
I really want vertically stacked system buttons*

Thank you! Like many others, I am not really a fan of the new sidebar. Maybe I’ll get used to it over time, but I appreciate having the option to return to the old layout for now.

Thank you for creating this. The non-removable text on the favourites icons in the start menu was having me thinking about going to native Debian.

I have no idea why we can't turn off text on the sidebar in default mint...
Melroy van den Berg
I also do not know why I can not vertically stack the system button in the new default menu.

Oh, you absolute legend. Thank you! Given that this is almost always going to replace the existing menu applet rather than simply being added to the panel, it would be nice to have the README include explicit instructions for how to to that for folks not already familiar with panel editing.

Thank you for making this. I really hate the new menu so I'm glad that this came out right as 22.3 released.

Thank-you for sharing this. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but the new layout with 3 columns is a little confusing. My elderly brain is used to rely on colours, so Black & white icons are less efficient. Finally, the 4 or 5 icons on narrow sidebar, are really a plus, as «every day icons» are on TaskBar, and «not everyday, but I want a fast access» on the Start Menu was a real improvement over the [Windows XP] text. I'm aware the new start menu should be an improvement for a lot people, but everyone don't use this feature the same way…
Melroy van den Berg
its not just you ;) I'm 36.. I also want the classic menu

Many thanks! The new menu isn’t bad and fits the Nemo style nicely, but it isn’t customizable. As a result, I could no longer read the hovered lines with my ~/.theme. Best regards.

Thank you fredcw. It seems a shame that you have had to do this in order that those of us who felt very, very comfortable with the classic menu could continue to use the same trackpad actions. It is almost possible to get back there, but the new system icons are rather small, and require tighter control to hit. Regards uncledulgaria

Actually, the size of those buttons in the new menu is set by the theme. Copy your theme to ~/.themes. Look for appmenu-system-button in the cinnamon.css in your theme and change the padding value.
