Displays in realtime the cpu usage for each core/cpu and overall memory usage.

Multi-Core System Monitor

This applet displays real-time CPU usage for each core/processor as well as overall memory and disk usage.

Dependencies

For Cinnamon version lesser than 6.4 you must install the gir1.2-gtop-2.0 package to use this applet. This package is no longer needed with Cinnamon 6.4+.

Instructions for upgrading to Cinnamon 6.4

From Applet Settings:

Uninstall entirely this applet, selecting it then using the ⨂ button.
Use the Download tab to download this applet.
Return to Manage tab to add this applet to your panel.
Open this applet settings and configure it using each tab.
The Colors tab allows you to set the colors used by Net and Disks devices.
In the Net and Disk IO tabs, you can use the “Update Device List” button to display the devices used by your system.
Some changes require the use of the “Refresh All” option in the context menu. Use a “Refresh Rate (ms)” greater than or equal to 1000 for better results.

When I change the screen resolution, the size of the graphics changes. Is there a workaround for this? Restarting Chinnamon does not help because I then have to change the resolution again.

The size of graphics is expressed in pixels. When you change the screen resolution without changing these values, it is normal for graphics to become larger or smaller.

There appears to be a bug in: get-disk-info.sh Version 2.5.2 (2025-08-11 21:46:37) The -A option is reporting as an invalid option, perhaps -a is meant instead?

lsblk from util-linux 2.37.2 doesnt have the option to not display empty devices, 2.38+ does but that's not being backported so far, from what I can gather

Linux Mint 21 series Cinnamon 6.0 series lsblk from util-linux 2.37.2 lsblk doesn't appear to have an option to not print empty devices. I believe it does so by default. When using -a the loopN devices are listed without the -a only the storage devices I have are listed. Also, I can never get any device, other than /, to display in the disks preferences tab. How can I debug the applet?

Thank you. I will update `get-disk-info.sh` but it is useless with Cinnamon 6.0. Try updating to Cinnamon 6.4 to view data from nvme disks.

I'm using a translator. Hi. Thanks for the additional instructions on how to update the app to make it work. It took me a while to figure out why all the colors and settings were broken. And the network and disks stopped showing anything at all, and only went to the site read that you need to uninstall and put the application again, and update its functions separately. However, I have a question. Previously, in the circle Memory, clearly showed how much is occupied, how much in the buffer, and free. But now I don't see the option to show the buffer anywhere. Except in the details on mouseover. Is this the way it's designed, or is it part of the problem?

The video stutter bug is still not resolved, it's a lot better with the more efficient script but I believe the root issue is still there. Clearly visible stutter on panning shots in video or glxgears correlating to the applet refresh rate, reloading Cinnamon tames it down a bit, but it only goes away completely by disabling the applet. Like some others have written I've had this stutter for a long time, probably years, but I never correlated it to this applet until the recent issues exaggerated it.

I'm not noticing any difference unfortunately. I'm not a programmer myself, but it seems as if the problem is the stat polling makes Cinnamon pause drawing the screen, maybe it's possible to uncouple the polling from the drawing of the applet in some way?

Claudiux, it did solve the negative memory calculations and the outputs exceeding 100%. Unfortunately, the newest update removed the cached and buffer entries. I always used those to see how close I may be getting to using the swap file and would hate to lose them.

All you need to do is to right click on Multi-Core System Monitor, select configure, select the "more options" button at the top right corner of the configuration settings and select "export to file". This will save your settings, options, colors, etc... to a .json file. To restore your settings, perform the same steps as above but choose "import from file" to restore your personalized options.

Claudiux, thanks for the prompt action on the issue. Unfortunately, for me, now it seems as if Multi-Core System Monitor 2.2.1 itself is causing slightly elevated CPU usage. With the program running, Gnome System Monitor is consistently showing CPU usage values in the 8-15% range on most of the cores. In the previous version, Multi-Core was showing 50-60 percentage ranges on all the cores but Gnome System Monitor was showing 0-3% on all cores when computer was idle, as is normal. Put more simply, while using Multi-Core 2.2.1, actual accurate readings of CPU values on Gnome System Monitor never drop down to the 0% - 3% range, they are slightly elevated. Hey Claudiux! Great fix; usage is back to normal! :) Only issue still is when using: Colour by activity level + NOT use automatic colours; it only uses the 20-40 colour, randomly changing to white sometimes on random cores. Minor issue: CPU graph doesn't use the full space even with labels disabled (also if labels could be enabled per graph instead of all on/off that'd be great.) I'm also not entirely sure about having a table of colours instead of setting them per readout. I had configured the network and disk IO colours to be more distinguished for all drives and now I can't tell which is what without having to go through them all again in a clunky and limited fashion; 2 Network types, up and down is 4 colours used. 6 disks read and write is 12 colours used- yet there's only space for 15. While I realise I may be an outlier in this regard it's still a bit of an iffy change.

As mentioned by several others, extremely erratic and incorrect CPU Usage date showing false high readouts. Have reinstalled, a couple of times, rather than just updating to attempt to rectify issue thinking it was a problem on my end. Thanks to Claudiux for a great and beloved applet and will be checking back periodically to see when I can start using it again. :-)

Latest update, CPU non-automatic colours doesn't work, it just sets them all to white, I also have to echo Piotr and YashaNoos, the core percentage is way off and looks to be almost 100% constantly when actual core usage is closer to 4%. Also now missing the ability to turn the labels off.

v19.8 is here. Now this applet works even even then you plug-in or plug-out an ethernet device on a USB-C port. In addition, by right-clicking on this applet, you can choose to drop the memory cache (or at least reduce its size) to obtain truly free memory. Enjoy!

This would be a solution for many people. About which people have already written below, complaining that even the gnome system monitor is lost.

On Linux Mint 21.3, at some point the RAM and DISK graphs disappear, leaving only one CPU. If I close any program, the graphs return. Most often it works when closing Firefox. Updating the graphs does not help, even deleting and adding the applet has no effect.

The same behavior on fresh install of Mint 22. "Refresh graphs" shows MEM NET DISK for a second but w/o graphs and then only CPU remains back again. Did you find a workaround for this bug, it's not clear from your comment? I'm going to temporarily leave only CPU graph until this will be fixed or don't use it at all.

Version 1.9.5 allows you to choose, in the context menu (right-click), whether the applet should be displayed with or without graphics. The tooltip with values is still present.

Hi, I upgraded from Linux Mint 20 to 21 and found out that the applet doesn't work in vertical panels anymore. It worked in LM 20. Is there any chance the vertical panel support will be added in the future? It's been requested in the past (see further down).

Note that they are only shown briefly, the applets then reverts to 2 graphs. But It changes the layout of the panel.

Version 1.9.2 is here. Now, CPU activity bars can be colored by activity level (five sets of levels: 0-20%, 20-40%, and so on in 20% increments). You can also choose to color these bars automatically, by progressive color from blue to red (blue: close to 0%, red: close to 100%). Enjoy!

Clicking on the applet with the mouse opens gnome-system-monitor. It's fast and convenient, but what if I changed it to another monitor, for example, mate-system-monitor. Is there a way to make it launch when clicked?

Running Cinnamon 5.0.5 here with your applet 1.8.91 (2021-04-04 13:07:04) I find you are allocating excessive memory overnight while the cinnamon screen saver is running. I have my memory-limit set at 320MB and in less than three hours of screen saver the limit will be reached with your applet enabled. I disabled your applet last night at 21:33 and even now Cinnamon is only using 115Mb here. If you need additional information to correct this problem please let me know. If you have a debug version or test you would like me to run please contact me.

I just installed this and it does not work. I get the files in ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/muliticore..., but nothing in ~./cinnamon/configs/multi... In system setup, I get the info icon, nothing else. Running Mint 19.3 Cinnamon. I have the gir1.2-gtop-2.0 package installed. Any Idea?

I upgraded to Linux Mint 20 using kernel 5.4.0-40 and after a long time of working without a hitch, the system now shows frequent hard freezes a few minutes after booting where nothing helps except pressing the reset button. I removed the applet and the system has been stable for some hours now. Any ideas? I really like this applet.

This latest version 1.8.91 (2020-04-19 21:43:39) has fixed the 'freezing' issue I experienced (reported by scomoletti). The workaround was to logout-user then log back in. Multi-Core System Monitor now functions every time the PC boots, which is a great relief as the applet is VERY useful for keeping an eye on system health. The issue only affected my desktop PC, and 2 laptops also with Multi-Core System Monitor, never exhibited the freezing problem.

Please, Im just setting up a new system on an nvme that I had to set to sata AHCI in bios, linux wouldn't recognize it. But now the disk IO doesn't show any graphs... It is enabled and scaling and everything is switched on in the disk settings of this app, but nothing visible. Does anyone know about this behavior? Is it because of the NVMe? Or AHCI? Or because it is one of two disks in the pc? At my work, I have also two but it worked just fine. Thank you for any response.

Same here. I think it is a libgtop issue (in my case, I am on LVM). See discussion in different applet with the same problem: https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon-spices-applets/issues/2801 Libgtop tickets are quite old, so I don't think it will get fixed any time soon. Any possibility to have disk I/O implemented differently in this otherwise great applet?

v1.8.91 Appears to have trouble on Mint 19.3 with Cinnamon 4.4.5. CPU stops updating after a few minutes and I don't think I've noticed MEM update after initial start either. Network and Disk both stop updating and preferences is inaccessible shortly after CPU stops updating. Applet never crashes completely and does launch the system monitor correctly when clicked. I did upgrade from 19.2, and followed the steps to remove configs and cached files.

I'm having the same issue as posted by scomoletti, even with the latest 1.8.91 (2019-12-29 07:19:23) version. The only way to get Multi-Core System Monitor to work correctly is to Log-out of Mint 19.3 then Log-in again. The app then works fine until a full PC re-boot i.e. starting the PC from scratch causes the applet to 'freeze' after approx 10s. Anything else I could try as this app is really, really useful?

CORRECTION: After deleting the applet and re-adding and setting preferences, all is well. Previously I had 'updated' using the Applets utility. It seems a full delete + add is required.

Just had to restart cinnamon here and after the restart hovering the mouse cursor over the monitor no longer displays the pop-up details. I can still click on it to open the system monitor or right click to pop-up the menu, but hovering isn't working. This is in CobiWindowList and I find that hover works as expected on pinned apps with open windows and other widgets. Let me know if you need more information.

I separate my data from my boot partition, so only the boot(root) partition displays on my system. I assume there is a way to add my data partition, but I see no way to add it in the preferences. I assume that it can be added by editing your prefs.json, but I have no documentation on how to do so. Would the additional disk display in the same area as the root? If so, I would need to change colors to distinguish them from one another. I am in the process of recovering from a hard drive failure. It would have been great if had been an indicator of some sort in my cinnamon panel telling me how healthy my hard drive is. I understand that such data is available from the drive via S.M.A.R.T, but from what I have seen you can drown in details there and it takes understanding of the data to determine the state of the drive. I would like to see a simple colored dot in the disk display colored green if the drive has no problems at all, yellow if there are signs of problems developing and red if the data on the disk is in danger of loss. Any variant on this would be acceptable and would have warned me to buy an new drive and clone the current one prior to failure. I am unaware of any other applet with such a feature and yours appears to be a good fit, so please consider this added function. Dave

Hi Jason, since the last update (I updated recently, don't really it often) current version does not respect height setting. Height of applet never changes, whatever I set it to. I have the same behavior on Mint 18.2 and Arch Linux. Since I set my panel to be a bit smaller that default, this applet is now too big. Thanks.

Jason, I have been using the applet for many years and I appreciate your active involvement on this great applet. The applet is still working perfectly but I have recently noticed it is gradually filling up .xsession-errors on my machine until it reaches the file size limit. dmesg looks clean. I am using Mint 18.2/Cinnamon 3.4.6 and I have done a remove and reinstall of the applet clearing folders as suggested. One minor complaint, not even really a complaint, that has driven me bonkers since I first used this applet; the pie chart for memory usage. I like having a short history and can see if there is a misbehaving app (or my own dumbness) has caused a memory usage spike. Could you please either change it or give the option to use a plotted graph like the network and disk monitors use? Thanks and thanks for the great monitoring applet!

It looks like the mint control panel is installing an older version so just just remove Multi-Core System Monitor in mint control panel, download zip manually from this site and unzip it to ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets. :)

Version 1.5, which is currently the latest one, seems not to be compatible with Cinnamon 3.4.1. Is there a way to make it compatible?

The changelog info is from the original author. The newest version is 1.6 which does support 3.4. Please check for an update in System Settings -> Applets.

I think your latest upgrade may've broken something (leastwise, on my machine). Trying to add the applet errors out and the error message given in glass.log is "error t=2017-06-04T01:19:19.277Z Mainloop.idle_add_full is not a function". I'm running Linux Mint 18, version 3.0.7. If there's any further info. you might need or tests to run, let me know and I'm more than happy to help.

Great applet. Feature request, I'd love to be able to specify a refresh rate greater than 1 second (1000ms) in the GUI. When running Mint in a VM I don't need to have a very accurate current CPU or memory load.

And, it's been fixed, apparently. Try removing it from the installed apps, go to online list, refresh, and reinstall. It also appears cinnamon itself was updated, so perhaps that's part of it?

George Cohn I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. For the time being I'm using an oldie but goodie, gkrellm. But I'd rather use something more integrated with Cinnamon.
